Ten women, One heart, One love, One God.

On January 27, 2006, my mother and I departed for an overnight retreat. Having not been away for over eight years for various reasons, I was full of mixed emotions. Anxiety ran through my veins because of the change itself, yet, my heart was full of excitement as I wondered what I'd learn about myself, my relationship with God- even about my own mother. As we pulled up to the old, New England colonial, reminiscent of a Bed and Breakfast, I was taken back by it's beauty. Sitting on 113 acres of beautiful country, it was hard to believe I was still in Massachusetts, only minutes from a major route.

Unloading our overly packed bags, my mother and I headed into the house to get situated, greet the others, and satisfy our curiosity about the place. After saying our hellos to the eight women on the journey, one of whom was the Pastor, we headed to our room. Four small, twin beds blanketed with what appeared to be handmade quilts filled the lovely space, along with a fireplace. Large windows offered a splendid view of the grounds, laden with baron trees, branches stretched out, seemingly reaching towards the sky. We also had a roommate, and the three of us felt like girls in a sorority house. It was a magical, fun and light feeling. However, that was just the beginning of a twenty-four hour retreat that would leave a mark on my heart...forever. Although I cannot get into detail about personal things shared between our intimate group of ten during our "Nurturing Ourselves Through Our Faith" retreat, I can say through our Pastor's expertise in leading us down the path to God, our willingness to trust in each other and most importantly in God, we gained a connection of love, honesty and kinship that could not have been achieved without the very real presence of God in our midst. As the hours past, all too quickly, I felt my heart opening up to Jesus. I reflected on those times I didn't let Him in, and on times when I thought I did, but wasn't giving Him the time He deserved and needed in my life for me to feel and hear, His messages to me. On more than one occasion, my eyes watered as I thought about how Christ must have felt during his days when he walked the earth in human form. I cried over my inability to let go, and cried even harder when I did LET GO, placing my burdens in the loving hands of Jesus.

I learned so much- about God, Christ, myself and others. My perception of the world was altered and I was lifted to a much better, brighter and lighter place by taking the load from my shoulders and placing it on ones much stronger and capable than mine- those of Christ. My breathing calmed, as did every muscle in my body and I found myself doing something I hadn't done in a very long time- feeling JOY flow through my entire being.

The world God created and placed us in, although large, is connected by a single thread-GOD. We are bound to each other by the unseen, yet the strongest thing in the world-OUR CREATOR. Through God's love, planted within each and every one of us, we are truly one body- and...that's how I came to realize on one particular overnight retreat that ten women shared one heart, one love, one God. Wouldn't it be wonderful if the whole world took the time to retreat from themselves and the distractions of a busy life- finding the time to discover the place within themselves called GOD?
